TREMELLA MUSHROOM Tremella fuciformis "Bai Mu Erh"
A large flowery fungus that is one of the most significant of the medicinal mushrooms, with a long tradition of healing and culinary use in China. Tremella polysaccharides are proven to enhance cellular and immune function. Used in Chinese hospitals as a co-treatment with chemo and radiation therapy and for hepatitis. In Chinese herbalism it has specific action on the lungs, used for coughs, asthma and bronchitis in a one month daily use program. Recommended for anyone smoking tobacco or other herbal products. Clinical research has also shown the fungus to be antidiabetic, antitumor, hepatoprotective, cholesterol reducing, to slow aging and prevent osteoporosis by enhancing calcium absorption. Used for the purpose of "beautifying the skin" since antiquity, it is said that the most beautiful woman in Chinese history, the Imperial Concubine Yang Gufei (719–756), was highly enthusiastic about the mushroom for her body care. Very nutritious, containing high amounts of essential fatty acids, vitamin D and dietary fibers. Considered a delicacy, traditionally used in soup, stir fry or boiled in wine. Soaking the dried fungus in water for 5 minutes renders it edible and we enjoy its gelatinous quality, chopped and added to salad. Tremella is also popular made into a candy or syrup by boiling with honey or sugar. This versatile fungus is one of our favorites!
