Known as "potency wood" throughout Brazil, this is among the most esteemed herbs from the Amazon. The root is used in folk medicine as a CNS stimulant, a powerful aphrodisiac and for sexual impotence. The preparation is generally made by soaking chips in jungle rum sealed in a jar and buried in the earth for a period of time. Recent clinical studies have validated Muira-Puama’s effectiveness in improving libido and sexual function for both men and women. It is most effective when taken as a daily tonic. Although the active compounds are best extracted by alcohol, it is also brewed as a tea and used in herbal blends with Catuaba, Ashwaghanda, Eleuthero and Ginkgo. It is said by some to combine well with popular smoking herbs.
