MESQUITE MEAL, PERUVIAN Prosopis chilensis "Algorroba"
Since ancient times desert dwellers of the Americas have used the seed pods of the Mesquite tree as a dietary product. Algorroba Mesquite grows wild in arid regions of South America. The pods are dried and ground into a flour that has a sweet, nutty, carob-like flavor with a hint of caramel. It is a good source of calcium, manganese, potassium, iron and zinc. Its high fiber and protein content aids in stabilizing blood sugar, making it a good choice for diabetics. It is traditionally made into cakes, breads, sweet beverages or fermented into an alcoholic drink. It mixes well with many teas and coffee substitutes, as well as chocolate preparations. One delicious medicinal concoction blends Mesquite, Cacao, Maca and Lucuma with milk. Our finely ground Mesquite meal is wildcrafted in the mineral rich deserts of northern Peru.
